Jessica Pegula had a tough day at the Dubai Tennis Championships, crashing out of the tournament at the semi-final stage.
She lost 6-1, 7-5, 6-0 to Barbora Krejčíková, despite her best attempts to turn the match around.
To make matters worse, Pegula was celebrating her 29th birthday on the day of the defeat.
The tennis star – the daughter of billionaire Buffalo Bills owner Terry Pegula – fortunately seemed to find the situation humorous.
She poked fun at herself in a hilarious post on Twitter.
What was Jessica Pegula’s response to her bad day at the Dubai Tennis Championships?
Pegula shared a photo on Twitter of herself eating a packet of Doritos, alongside the caption: “Everyone: ‘What is it like playing on tour? It must be so amazing!’
“Me: gets bagled on your birthday, sitting eating Doritos at midnight, waiting to get on a 16 hr flight home. ?”
The post went down well with fans, accumulating nearly 1,000 retweets and 16,000 likes.
Pegula then followed with a serious comment, writing: “In all seriousness. Proud of my efforts the past two weeks. Time for some rest.”
Who is Jessica Pegula?
Pegula is the current world number three, behind only Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka.
She has enjoyed an impressive start to 2023, reaching the Australian Open quarter-finals and the Doha Open final.
Had Pegula defeated Krejčíková in the Dubai Tennis Championships, she would have come up against Swiatek in the final again, having already lost to the Polish star at the Doha Open.
Next up for Pegula will be Indian Wells, a WTA 1000 event which starts in California on March 6th.
The American talent recently opened up about her mother’s cardiac arrest in June 2022, which has left her “dealing with significant expressive aphasia and significant memory issues”.
Kim Pegula is President and chief executive of Pegula Sports and Entertainment, and President and co-owner of the Buffalo Bills and Buffalo Sabres. She is the first woman to be President of both an NFL and NHL team.
In an emotional article for The Players Tribune, Jessica Pegula revealed that she considered quitting tennis to help with her mother’s recovery.
“Suddenly, I went from ‘Let’s celebrate top 10 in the world’ to ‘Do I need to start thinking about my career after tennis a lot sooner than I thought?’
“’Does my dad and family need help?’ ‘Maybe I should just go back to school and work for the family.’
“I am 28 and I take pride in being able to handle every situation thrown at me, but this was A LOT.”
